Using vibrant colours and intricate linework, Gilliland presents a dynamic bird’s-eye view of the historic waterfront district and Monterey Bay, immortalised in John Steinbeck's novel of the same name. The bold title spans the top, flanked by illustrations of seals, fish, and pelicans that celebrate the region’s rich maritime heritage. Rendered from a bird's eye perspective and enriched with historical references, the map traces Cannery Row’s transformation from a fishing and canning centre into a thriving tourist destination, complete with restaurants, shops, and landmarks such as the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The harbour teems with boats and marine life, while the shoreline features carefully drawn historic buildings. A portrait of Steinbeck pays tribute to his deep connection with the area. Humorous touches—a hot air balloon, smiling sun, vintage seaplane, and a tourist waterskiing behind a shark—add light-hearted nostalgia, making this as much a piece of art as a functional guide. Distant landmarks like Pebble Beach golf course and Carmel-by-the-Sea are flagged on the horizon.
