It stands on the medieval nunnery site above St James's public gardens and is still an active parish. In the sheet's day, the Hugh Myddelton Schools occupied a substantial site north of the church. They were built in 1893 over the vaults of the demolished House of Detention and closed in 1971, and the main building is now the Kingsway Place apartments, with its distinctive architecture intact. On the Green, the Welsh Charity School of 1738 has housed the Marx Memorial Library since 1933. The sheet also names the Advance Foundry, Woodbridge House and a medical mission. Printers in Clerkenwell Close and St James Walk, Mono Pumps' testing premises and a time-recorder works reveal a concentration of skilled production among the houses and institutions. Former industrial buildings across Clerkenwell have since become offices, homes and design studios, while printing continues locally, now including digital production. These plans were produced to rate property and fire risk, and they carry pasted overlays noting new uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The last dated correction on this sheet is March 1970. Resurveyed and reissued in June 1944, with a 1950 copyright date, the sheet belongs to a group whose key plans were still being corrected in October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Clerkenwell Close, Bowling Green Lane, Corporation Row, Sans Walk, St James Row, Scotswood Street, Sekforde Street, Woodbridge Street and Aylesbury Street.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-9-001137a_e9d166e4-a9a4-4c78-851c-388fed233fc5.jpg?v=1792149062
goad-london-130-ec1-clerkenwell-st-john-street-cannon-brewery-1944-1970-map-p-9-001138
Goad London 130—EC1—Clerkenwell—St John Street—Cannon Brewery 1944 (1970) map

Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 130 [Clerkenwell: St John Street, Sekforde Street, Compton Street and the Cannon Brewery]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 130, covers St John Street and Sekforde Street (EC1) and shows trades, brewery and university side by side. Scholl's elastic-stocking factory was the footcare firm's London headquarters from 1930 until its takeover in the late 1980s. In the sheet's day it stood by the Woodhouse Hulme meat preparation and distributing premises, cold storage and the Allied Breweries premises. Those brewery premises were the old Cannon Brewery, which stopped brewing in 1955, housed Allied until the late 1980s and became Brewery Square in 2002. This unusually varied mix shows that St John Street then made and distributed everyday necessities beside housing at Grimthorpe House and education in the City University annexes. The university was chartered in 1966, joined the University of London in 2016 and merged with St George's in 2024. The plans were made for assessing property and fire risk, and they were amended with pasted slips recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The last dated correction on this sheet is March 1970. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in June 1944, with a 1950 copyright date, and the key plans acquired with it carry corrections as late as October 1970 and March 1971. The Gate has been the headquarters of the Order of St John since the 1870s. It holds the Order's museum, which was renovated in 2010, while the St John Ambulance Brigade headquarters has been rebuilt on St John's Lane. St John's Church was burnt out in May 1941 and rebuilt by 1958 over its twelfth-century crypt, and it keeps the Cloister Gardens from that restoration. Nearby, the sheet records Unilever's maintenance works, GPO engineers' offices, lift engineers, printers and non-ferrous-metal storage, revealing what was then a practical industrial setting. Since the 1980s that setting has turned to offices, design studios and showrooms, a change of work in a district long known for skilled trades. The plans were compiled to assess fire risk, and they carry pasted slips recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The last dated correction on this sheet is March 1970.
