Edward Goldman’s map colours the isthmus into lower tropical, upper tropical and temperate life zones, with dotted and plain shading separating the humid Caribbean slope and Darién from the drier Pacific lowlands, while the mountain forests of Chiriquí, crowned by the green temperate summit of the volcano, and the high ridges of the Darién stand out in red from the lowlands either side of the Canal Zone. Goldman, a mammalogist of the Biological Survey, worked in Panama while the Canal was being completed; he dated the map 1918, and the Smithsonian published it in 1920 as Plate 1 of his Mammals of Panama. An early and handsome piece of ecological mapping of Central America.
