Its key lists the border crossings ‘authorized by Pankow’, the West’s shorthand for the East German regime, since 23 August: Friedrichstrasse at Zimmerstrasse, Checkpoint Charlie, for diplomats, Allied forces and foreigners, and Heinrich-Heine-Strasse and Bornholmer Strasse for West Germans. It explains how West Berlin’s U-Bahn trains now ran beneath the East without stopping, except at Friedrichstrasse. Around the division the city carries on, with its railways, parks, forests and twenty-two numbered landmarks, explained in four languages; the reverse adds maps of the corridors to West Germany and of a divided Germany. Issued by the West Berlin press office, it is among the earliest and most graphic maps of the Wall, and an early state: the later 1962 issues number twenty-one landmarks.
