The sheet also shows Lubetkin's Grade I Finsbury Health Centre of 1935–8, which still treats patients. Through the school for printing, the Hatch, Pinner & Co. Ltd bookbinders' warehouse and numerous printing premises, it traces the book and print trades that lie behind Clerkenwell's design businesses and showrooms today. From 1976 until it left for King's Cross in 2008, the Guardian followed these trades at 119 Farringdon Road, and The Ray offices of 2019 now fill the site. Peabody Buildings (Clerkenwell Estate) and GPO offices also appear on the sheet. The plans were compiled for property and fire-risk assessment, and they carry pasted slips recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The last dated corrections, from March 1970, mark the first floor of 68 Farringdon Road, in block 1144, as vacant. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in July 1942, with a 1950 copyright date, and key plans acquired with the group were corrected as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Clerkenwell Road, Bowling Green Lane, Northampton Road, Baker's Row, Warner Street, Ray Street, Back Hill, Herbal Hill and Topham Street.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-9-001136a_dd7d765a-7657-4521-a954-8e92290f88b5.jpg?v=1792149060
goad-london-129-ec1-clerkenwell-green-st-james-s-church-1944-1970-old-map-p-9-001137
Goad London 129—EC1—Clerkenwell Green—St James's Church 1944 (1970) old map

Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 129 [Clerkenwell Green, Clerkenwell Close, St James's Church and the Hugh Myddelton Schools]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 129, covers Clerkenwell Green and St James (EC1), the area around St James Clerkenwell, James Carr's church of 1792. It stands on the medieval nunnery site above St James's public gardens and is still an active parish. In the sheet's day, the Hugh Myddelton Schools occupied a substantial site north of the church. They were built in 1893 over the vaults of the demolished House of Detention and closed in 1971, and the main building is now the Kingsway Place apartments, with its distinctive architecture intact. On the Green, the Welsh Charity School of 1738 has housed the Marx Memorial Library since 1933. The sheet also names the Advance Foundry, Woodbridge House and a medical mission. Printers in Clerkenwell Close and St James Walk, Mono Pumps' testing premises and a time-recorder works reveal a concentration of skilled production among the houses and institutions. Former industrial buildings across Clerkenwell have since become offices, homes and design studios, while printing continues locally, now including digital production. These plans were produced to rate property and fire risk, and they carry pasted overlays noting new uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The last dated correction on this sheet is March 1970. Resurveyed and reissued in June 1944, with a 1950 copyright date, the sheet belongs to a group whose key plans were still being corrected in October 1970 and March 1971.
