Some 300 vineyards in 27 counties share the sheet with playful local landmarks: the Cerne Abbas giant, Lincoln Cathedral and Shropshire’s Iron Bridge. Hambledon’s eighteenth-century cricketer ties the pioneering vineyard to the village’s other celebrated tradition. Issued when the English Vineyards Association reported nearly 1,000 acres under vine, it records a landscape dominated by cool-climate varieties such as Müller-Thurgau, Reichensteiner and Seyval Blanc. Most of those vineyards subsequently disappeared, but around twenty identifiable sites or successor estates still make wine, including Hambledon, Biddenden, Breaky Bottom, Three Choirs, New Hall, Stanlake Park, Astley, Renishaw and Adgestone; Tenterden became Chapel Down and Bookers became Bolney. The industry’s later reinvention around Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier transformed this first wave into today’s internationally recognised sparkling-wine sector. Scarce: the only other example we have traced is held in the Berry Bros. & Rudd archive.
