The Public Record Office, with its reading rooms and document storage, then dominated the block between Chancery Lane and Fetter Lane. Its records went to Kew, and since 2002 the building has been King's College London's Maughan Library, preserving a scholarly use as state records gave way to university study. The Bank of England Law Courts branch on Fleet Street closed in 1975 and has been The Old Bank of England pub since 1994, while the Law Society and St Dunstan-in-the-West remain. The sheet also names the Royal Insurance offices, Du Pont House and Rosebery House. Printers, bookbinders and law stationers around Carey Street, Bell Yard and Star Yard reveal the trades that supplied the legal quarter's paper-based work. The law remains here, but electronic filing at the Royal Courts of Justice has transferred part of that document traffic from printed bundles to digital files. These working plans were drawn for property and fire-risk assessment, and they carried pasted overlays recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and new building. The latest dated correction here is a vacancy annotation of September 1969 beside St Dunstan-in-the-West. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in January 1962, with a 1962 copyright date, and the key plans acquired with it carry corrections as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Carey Street, Bell Yard, Star Yard, Chichester Rents, Breams Buildings and Clifford's Inn.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-9-001201a_f1c02aec-8c93-43c1-89ef-8b25c0e7c983.jpg?v=1792149225
goad-london-36-ec4-wc2-holborn-staple-inn-chancery-ln-old-square-1940-1969-map-p-9-001204
Goad London 36—EC4/WC2—Holborn—Staple Inn—Chancery Ln—Old Square 1940 (1969) map

Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 36 [Holborn, Chancery Lane, Staple Inn and Lincoln's Inn]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 36, covers Holborn and Staple Inn (EC4, WC2 and WC1), where Staple Inn's timber-framed front of 1585 still faces High Holborn. Today the Inn's Hall houses the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. Chancery Lane Safe Deposit, which the sheet labels beneath the office accommodation, lives on as the London Silver Vaults. Dealers there still sell antique and contemporary silver, an unusually enduring trade in this legal district. The sheet also names the Patent Office library, whose collection is now part of the British Library. It names the Chancery Lane Underground Station booking offices, National Westminster Bank, the Sun Alliance offices and Lincoln's Inn Chapel as well. These working plans were prepared for property and fire-risk assessment, and they carried pasted overlays recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and new building. The Heron House office development is marked under construction in September 1969, matching the date of the Breams Buildings vacancy annotation, and this is the latest dated correction. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in February 1940, with a 1950 copyright date, and the key plans acquired with it carry corrections as late as October 1970 and March 1971. The sheet shows the works' reel storage, machine spaces and engineering accommodation, exposing the factory behind the newspaper. Owen Williams's Mirror building overlooked Holborn Circus from 1961 until 1994. Its replacement by the 33 Holborn office development, which has been Sainsbury's headquarters since 2001, marks the loss of a major manufacturing workplace from the City fringe. On the sheet, Mirror House, the W. H. Smith & Sons premises and a computer centre appear alongside Buchanan House, Prestige House and Halton House. Field House, on Breams Buildings, is today an immigration and asylum tribunal hearing centre. These working plans were drawn for property and fire-risk assessment, and they carried pasted overlays recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and new building. The latest dated correction on this sheet is an upper-floor vacancy note of September 1969 at 83 Fetter Lane.
