Gresham House, Palmerston House and the National Provincial Bank's Old Broad Street offices were cleared from 1970 for the tower, while the bank itself became National Westminster Bank on 1 January 1970. The tower was Britain's tallest building when it opened in 1981, and it is now Tower 42. St Ethelburga's Church, a medieval survivor of the Great Fire and the Blitz, was half destroyed by the IRA bomb of 24 April 1993 and reopened in 2002 as the Centre for Reconciliation and Peace. Hambros Bank, which was at 41 Bishopsgate until 1988, passed to Société Générale in 1998, and Barclays Bank and Kempson House are also named. The plans were drawn for fire-risk assessment, and they were kept current with pasted overlays recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in August 1941, with a 1949 copyright date, and its latest dated correction is August 1969. Key plans acquired with the group carry corrections as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Wormwood Street, Camomile Street, Houndsditch, Outwich Street, St Helen's Place, Union Court and Clark's Place.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-9-001126a_fdcb07e3-cf15-41fe-b179-b000f2fe7a75.jpg?v=1792149038
goad-london-68-ec3-bevis-marks-synagogue-baltic-exchange-bury-st-1943-1969-map-p-9-001128
Goad London 68—EC3—Bevis Marks Synagogue—Baltic Exchange—Bury St 1943 (1969) map

Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 68 [St Mary Axe, Houndsditch, the Baltic Exchange and Bevis Marks Synagogue]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 68, covers Bevis Marks and St Mary Axe (EC3), including the Baltic Mercantile and Shipping Exchange, whose hall of 1903 embodied the City's role in arranging international cargo movements. The IRA bomb of 10 April 1992 killed three people and wrecked the Exchange, and the ruin was razed in 1998. Its site, together with the neighbouring Chamber of Shipping, is now 30 St Mary Axe, Foster's Gherkin of 2004, where a landmark tower has taken the place of a specialised trading hall. Bevis Marks Synagogue of 1701, Britain's oldest in continuous use, still holds services, while St Andrew Undershaft of 1532 lost its seventeenth-century glass in the 1992 blast. Cunard House was rebuilt in the 1990s, and St Mary Axe House and West India House are also named.
