Two routes are picked out in red: one from Fenestrelle for the Pinerolo section, the other from Susa for the Susa section, converging on the Testa dell’Assietta. The summit’s stone obelisk, crowned by the CAI eagle, commemorated the Battle of Assietta of 19 July 1747, when heavily outnumbered Austro-Sardinian troops repelled a French assault during the War of the Austrian Succession. At 1:25,000 the 68 x 54 cm sheet gives unusually detailed coverage of the Susa and Chisone valleys, including Exilles, Chiomonte, Fenestrelle, Usseaux, roads, tracks, alpine settlements and military sites. It is a scarce, purpose-made survival linking battlefield memory with the early institutional history of Italian mountaineering.
