The pictorial plan distinguishes Jewish-controlled western Jerusalem from Arab territory—including the Old City—and marks the 1948 armistice line, no man’s land and United Nations-controlled zones at Government House and Mount Scopus. The Mandelbaum Gate, then the principal crossing between the two sectors, is also shown. Although carrying a 1952 copyright, the presence of the Hotel Jerusalem Intercontinental dates this revised impression to c.1964–66, shortly before the Six-Day War transformed the political geography recorded here. Published in Jordanian-administered East Jerusalem under the imprint Commercial Press, Jerusalem, “H[ashemite] K[ingdom] of Jordan,” it is an evocative and unusually accessible primary document of one of the most contested periods in the modern history of Jerusalem.
