The ten city districts (Bezirke) are coloured, and the independent suburbs beyond the city boundary, including Döbling, Währing, Hernals, Ottakring, Meidling and Simmering, have their own tints. The newly regulated Danube, the Prater park and the imperial palace of Schönbrunn are shown, with detailed street names and house numbers. A key decodes the coloured route signals carried by the cars of the two Vienna tramway companies. Lithographed by F. It spans the Wachau, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the neighbouring Kremstal and Kamptal, famous for Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. It is built on the 1:75,000 survey made by the Military Geographical Institute, the Austro-Hungarian army’s mapmakers in Vienna. The survey’s finely hatched hills give the valley real depth, and Lechner’s colour-coded footpaths wind across them past mountain huts and lookout towers. The vineyards are coloured brown and marked with a fine pattern of dots, matching the symbol for “Weingarten”, or vineyard, in the Institute’s 1904 key, so the vine-covered slopes around Wösendorf, Dürnstein, Gobelsburg and Zöbing stand out clearly. Because the map shows where vines grew a century ago, it invites comparison with today: some steep terraces, such as those at Heudürr near Dürnstein, now lie abandoned, while the Singerriedel at Spitz has been replanted over the past thirty years. The map is undated, but it shows the Wachau railway, opened along the north bank in December 1909, and its cover label omits the imperial court title Lechner used before the First World War, so it probably dates from the 1920s. Dissected into fifteen linen-backed panels, it folds into labelled cloth covers.
