Aircraft silhouettes and dashed lines trace Pan American’s Clippers, British Imperial Airways (merged into BOAC in 1940) and Japan’s own Dai Nippon Airways across a sea of islands stretching from the Philippines and Palau to New Guinea and Darwin, with distances between ports. War had already torn this prewar network apart: Hong Kong and Manila had fallen. Colonial labels still parcel the islands out among Dutch, Portuguese and Japanese rule; even the Spratly Islands, fiercely contested today, appear as Japanese. Beneath the bold red masthead runs the slogan “Exert all your strength; defend East Asia”. We have found no other example offered by a Western dealer.
