This later printing thus preserves a record of wartime photographic checking alongside its detailed contours, settlements, roads and railway. From Victoria and Kowloon, the map extends across Lantau, Deep Bay and Mirs Bay to the boundary at Sham Chun. Sha Tin’s open estuary and the small settlements around Tai Po precede their transformation into new towns, while Plover Cove remains a coastal inlet, before its conversion into a freshwater reservoir in the 1960s. The imprints distinguish the War Office’s 1946 third edition, the Ordnance Survey reprint of 1949 and the code identifying this impression as March 1952. Its extensive rural and coastal detail captures a landscape strikingly different from the densely developed territory familiar today.
