On a printed base headed July 1922, with a 1950 copyright date, this edition preserves smaller industrial plots and the works of the Ardath Tobacco Company, makers of State Express 555 cigarettes. Among its post-war amendments is a British Road Services garage. The surrounding printing, furniture, tobacco, paper and plastics premises reveal a broader manufacturing and warehousing district beyond Ardath's works. The later shift to offices and car parking changed the character of whole groups of small industrial plots, as the replacement edition described below makes clear. Wesley's Chapel of 1778 is still a working church, with Wesley's house and grave. The sheet also names Royal London House, Essex County Council offices and the City of London Territorial Regiment headquarters. It catches renamings in progress too, as Paradise Street became Clere Street, Castle Street became Epworth Street and Hill Street became Bonhill Street. Kept by insurers rating property and fire risk, the sheet carries pasted overlays recording changes of use, altered layouts, demolition and new building, and vacancy notes of June 1954 are its latest dated correction. The replacement edition, reissued in June 1956, reorganised these blocks as larger offices and car parking, with Standard House and changed uses on the former tobacco site. That reissue ended this sheet's regular updating in about 1956. Other streets on the sheet include Tabernacle Street, Paul Street, Worship Street, Wilson Street, Christopher Street and Platina Street.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-9-001148a_6ae0a1d1-bbdb-4f20-84e4-ac28590500ee.jpg?v=1792149091
goad-london-142-ec2-ec1-wesley-s-chapel-finsbury-sq-worship-st-1956-1970-map-p-9-001149
Goad London 142—EC2/EC1—Wesley's Chapel—Finsbury Sq—Worship St 1956 (1970) map

Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 142 [City Road, Finsbury Square, Worship Street and Wesley's Chapel — later copy]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 142, covers Wesley's Chapel, Finsbury Square and Worship Street (EC2 and EC1) in the June 1956 reissue. This reissue superseded the July 1922 base, an example of which is marked "obsolete". On this sheet, larger offices, Standard House, car parking and changed occupancies replace the tobacco premises and smaller industrial plots. Royal London House, then the Royal London Mutual Insurance Society's headquarters, became the Montcalm Royal London House hotel in 2016, so the story runs from industry to offices and on to hospitality. Wesley's Chapel and museum, dating from 1778, is still a working church beside Wesley's house. The sheet also names Singer sewing-machine premises and the City of London Regiment headquarters. Kept for insurers assessing property and fire risk, the sheet carries pasted overlays recording changes of use, altered layouts, demolition and new building. Its later amendments include March 1970 annotations and a construction note in block 1273, the latest dated correction. Resurveyed and reissued in June 1956, with a 1956 copyright date, the sheet belongs to a group whose key plans were still being corrected in October 1970 and March 1971. The car park is still there, run by NCP, under a square that keeps its bowling green. The square of 1777 lost its Georgian houses to commercial blocks, among them City Gate House of 1930 by Giles Gilbert Scott and the London & Manchester Assurance offices. That insurer passed to Friends Provident in November 1998 and is now part of Aviva. The sheet also names Dominion Buildings, commercial offices and basement car parks. It was drawn for fire-risk assessment and amended with pasted overlays recording new uses and rebuilding. Its latest dated corrections, from March 1970, include a vacancy note at 33 Wilson Street, while upper floors at 39 Wilson Street, in block 2872, were marked vacant in June 1968. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in August 1950, with a 1950 copyright date, and key plans acquired with the group were corrected as late as October 1970 and March 1971. The Honourable Artillery Company, the Army's oldest regiment, was chartered in 1537, and it has drilled there since the seventeenth century and still holds the ground. On the sheet, BP House, Burmah House, City Wall House, Finsbury Court, Lloyds Bank and the computer centre at Rambler House show a service economy taking hold. Yet workshops and stores still survived among the office blocks at the time. Gavrelle House at 2 Bunhill Row, then government offices, is now the University of Law's Moorgate campus. A slip behind B.P. House in block 245 is annotated 'Admission Refused Nov: 1961'. The plan was compiled to rate fire risk and stayed in service through pasted overlays logging new uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. Its latest dated correction is a basement and first-floor vacancy note of November 1970 at Evelyn House, 101 Finsbury Pavement. The sheet was reissued in November 1934, with a 1949 copyright date, and it belongs to a group whose key plans were still being corrected in October 1970 and March 1971.
