He was the second son of David Gordon, inventor and patentee of a system for compressing gas and using it in portable form. In 1837 Gordon published a treatise on locomotion that passed through three editions and was translated into several languages. In 1845 he patented this fumific impeller, an early proposal for jet propulsion.
