The depot was the London, Chatham and Dover Railway's Blackfriars Bridge station of 1864, and it carried freight until the mid-1960s. That ground records a River Thames freight economy that has twice been replaced. Sampson House, the Lloyds Bank centre of 1976–79, came down from late 2018, and the site is being redeveloped as Bankside Yards, with offices, homes and commercial uses around retained railway arches. Hopton's Almshouses of 1746–49 remain a recognisable landmark and still house older Southwark residents. Rennie's Wharf, the Service Wharves warehouses, Holland Wharf, Falcon Wharf and Walker \u0026amp; Whitehead's printing works then completed the riverside. These working plans were made to assess property and fire risk, and they were kept current with pasted slips. Here the slips detail depot and wharf occupancies, railway-arch uses and car parking, as well as Southwark Street premises marked vacant in March 1971, which is the latest dated correction identified. The sheet bears a December 1925 reprint date and a 1950 copyright date, and key plans acquired with the group were corrected as late as March 1971. The depot opened in 1864 as the London, Chatham and Dover Railway's Blackfriars Bridge station and was goods-only after 1886. It is now part of the Bankside Yards redevelopment, which is bringing offices, homes and new uses for the surviving railway arches, while Hopton's Almshouses of 1746–49 are still lived in. The sheet's Albion Wharf shares its name with the Albion Mills of 1786, the first steam-powered commercial flour mill in the United Kingdom. The mill stood at the Southwark end of Blackfriars Bridge until fire gutted it in 1791. Foundry Wharf, Falcon Wharf, Holland Wharf and Falcon Draw Dock then lined the River Thames. Outline editions served fire-risk assessment with footprints and plot divisions rather than occupancies. Later coloured revisions, which were kept current with pasted slips, add railway-arch uses, car parking and Southwark Street vacancy information. This outline edition was reissued in February 1950, and no later pasted building corrections have been identified on it. The key plans acquired with it were still being corrected in March 1971. It offers a direct comparison between Bankside's electricity-generating past and its present cultural role. Giles Gilbert Scott's building, which was designed for coal but built to burn oil, went up in two campaigns, in 1947–52 and 1958–63, and stopped generating in 1981. The St Christopher House outline marks the government office block of 1959, which has since been replaced by Bankside 1 2 3. Willow Wharf, Royal George Wharf, Queen's Wharf, Sunderland Wharf, Rose's Wharf, Crown Wharf, Travers Wharf and Phoenix Wharf then lined the River Thames. Outline editions were made for fire-risk assessment, and they give footprints and plot divisions rather than occupancies. The later coloured revisions, which were kept current with pasted slips, detail the boiler and turbine houses, the chimney and the oil storage. This outline edition was reissued in February 1950, and although pasted revisions are present, no correction on it carries a date. It shows the boiler house and turbine house, the switch rooms and control room, and the chimney and fuel-oil tanks. The turbine house on the sheet compares directly with the Turbine Hall, which opened to art audiences in 2000, and the plan maps the machinery behind a building now known for exhibitions and visitors. Designed for coal but built to burn oil, the power station was completed in December 1963 and shut down in 1981. Inland of Willow, Queen's and Crown Wharves on the River Thames then stood St Christopher House, the office block of 1959 that was replaced by Bankside 1 2 3. Goad's plans were made to assess property and fire risk, and they were kept current with pasted slips. Here a riverside warehouse is labelled vacant in a May 1968 correction, and the latest correction, of March 1971, notes the printing works at Hopton Street and Sumner Street as vacated.
