This is the edition marked “obsolete”, and it preserves both the plot of the St James's Theatre, which was demolished in 1957 despite a campaign by Olivier and Vivien Leigh, and the earlier club occupancies. Arthur's Club closed in 1940, and its house was taken over by the Carlton Club, which had been bombed out of its own building. The Conservative Club left in 1959, the Royal Societies Club was bombed out in 1941, and the Thatched House Club is also marked, while Boodle's Club, Brooks's Club, Dukes Hotel and the Stafford Hotel all survive. Goad's plans were drawn to assess property and fire risk, and they took pasted overlays as uses and buildings changed; on this sheet the Army \u0026amp; Navy Club is labelled “Under cons. Sept. 1926”, which is the latest explicitly dated correction. The printed base heading is dated March 1889. The replacement edition, resurveyed and reissued in September 1940 with a 1950 copyright date, was later amended to show bank and office premises on the theatre site and the Carlton Club in place of Arthur's Club. Regular updating of this predecessor ceased around the time of the 1940 reissue. Brooks's Club and Boodle's Club are both still there, and so is the Carlton Club at No. 69, which has been its home since bombs drove it from Pall Mall in 1940. Later amendments on the sheet show it in place of Arthur's Club, as well as offices on the former St James's Theatre site. The sheet also names Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures Ltd, Lloyds Bank and the Constitutional Club, which closed in 1979, together with Dukes Hotel and the Stafford Hotel, both of which are still trading. Goad's plans were compiled to assess property and fire risk, and they were amended with pasted slips as uses and buildings changed. At Beresford House on St James's Street, an annotation in the Overseas League premises marks the basement and first floor vacant in October 1970, which is the latest dated correction. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in September 1940, with a 1950 copyright date, and it superseded the March 1889 edition, an example of which is marked “obsolete”. The London Library has been at No. 14 since 1845, and Chatham House, the Royal Institute of International Affairs, has been at No. 10 since 1923. The clubs here fared in different ways. The Army \u0026amp; Navy Club rebuilt its Pall Mall clubhouse in 1963 and remains there, whereas the Junior Carlton Club replaced its Victorian house with offices in 1963–68 and merged into the Carlton Club in 1977. The Sports Club had already merged into the East India Club at No. 16 in 1938. On Jermyn Street, Rosa Lewis's Cavendish Hotel closed in June 1962 and reopened, rebuilt, in July 1966. Goad's plans were working documents for assessing property and fire risk, and they were updated with pasted overlays noting new uses, altered layouts, demolition and new building. Her Majesty's Theatre, which has been home to The Phantom of the Opera since 1986, became His Majesty's in May 2023, and in that same month the Carlton Theatre of 1927 closed as the Empire Haymarket. The Paramount Plaza Theatre, Paramount's picture palace of 1926, survives as the Vue Piccadilly. Nearby, the basement BBC studio marked at 12 Lower Regent Street identifies the Paris Theatre, still used by the BBC in the sheet's day and closed in 1995. The Beatles recorded three editions of Pop Go The Beatles here on 16 July 1963; Led Zeppelin's BBC concert followed on 1 April 1971 and Pink Floyd's on 30 September 1971, both after this sheet's final dated correction. The Guards Monument, cast from Sevastopol cannon, still stands, and the Ceylon Tea Centre and the Bank of Montreal are also marked. The sheet shows printing rooms, engravers and showrooms hidden behind the theatres and banks, trades that were easily overlooked at street level. Around St James's Market, the compact blocks of the sheet's day were redeveloped with offices, shops, restaurants and a public square, completed in 2016. Goad's plans were produced to assess property and fire risk, and they were kept up to date with pasted revisions noting new occupiers, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding; the sheet's latest dated correction is October 1970. The sheet shows the Royal Academy sharing its courtyard with the Linnean Society, the Geological Society and the Chemical Society. All of them are still there today, and the Chemical Society has been the Royal Society of Chemistry since 1980. Behind Burlington House, the sheet shows the British Museum's Ethnographical Department occupying the building later known as the Museum of Mankind, which closed in 1997. That use has gone, and 6 Burlington Gardens is now part of the Royal Academy's enlarged campus, linked through to Piccadilly in 2018. The store closed in 1982, and after housing Tower Records, Virgin Megastore, Zavvi and The Sting in turn, the building is to be refurbished by the Crown Estate as 10 Piccadilly. The sheet also shows the Regent Palace Hotel, Europe's largest hotel in 1915, filling a whole block, with its kitchens and service accommodation identified beside the public rooms. The hotel closed in 2006 and became Quadrant 3 in 2011 after substantial demolition and rebuilding, with offices, shops, homes and restaurants, retained façades and restored and reinstated historic interiors. The Piccadilly Hotel of 1908 trades on as The Dilly, Wren's St James's Church still keeps its Southwood Garden of 1946, and the Scotch House is also named. Goad's plans were made for fire-risk assessment, and they were updated by pasted slips recording changed occupancy, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The Lyric of 1888 is the avenue's oldest survivor. The London Pavilion, by then a cinema, closed in 1981 and was gutted in 1986 behind its façade of 1885, and it now holds a Zedwell hotel that opened in September 2025. On Great Windmill Street, the Cameo News Theatre closed in 1990 and is a restaurant today. The Who appeared on 26 August 1964, during their brief spell as the High Numbers; the Scene itself had closed before the sheet's final revision. Behind the theatres, in the sheet's day, National Car Parks occupied valuable ground around Ham Yard, where the Ham Yard Hotel of 2014 brought accommodation, shops and restaurants, a striking change from vehicle storage to the visitor economy.
