Under the headline “Special feature: Singapore”, aircraft mark the airfields, wireless masts tower over the island, and oil tanks, naval docks, coastal fortifications and reservoirs are laid out as an inventory of the British base Japan now held. Red roads carry the eye from the Causeway across the island. The black sea, pale land and bold red lettering, with a marginal slogan binding front line and home front, make this 1 March 1942 cover a striking piece of wartime design.
