The Southwark municipal offices shown here then occupied the former Newington Vestry Hall, which opened in 1865. Together with Southwark Central Library, that building forms what is now Walworth Town Hall. The town hall was badly damaged by a roof fire in March 2013, and it reopened at the turn of 2025 as workspace, a community centre and a café. Nearby, the sheet shows the Southwark Health Services Department, the Southern Region railway coal depot, the G.P.O. sorting office, cold stores, the Labour Hall and the Browning Settlement. Coal storage, sausage and cooked-meat manufacture, coachbuilding and vehicle repairs together reveal the businesses that kept the city supplied with fuel, food and transport. The South Central East and West housing developments subsequently introduced a substantial residential use along this working railway corridor. The settlement was founded in 1895, and its campaign helped win old-age pensions in 1908. Elsewhere, the sheet shows a former chapel plot that had become motor premises and cleared ground. These fire-risk plans took pasted overlays recording changes of use, demolition and rebuilding. The printed base heading is dated June 1901, with a 1952 copyright date. No correction carries a date, but the municipal-office label names the London Borough of Southwark, which was formed in 1965, so that amendment dates from 1965 or later. A key plan acquired with the group records corrections to March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Steedman Street, Crampton Street, Wansey Street, Larcom Street, Ethel Street, Amelia Street, Manor Place, Browning Street and Colworth Grove.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-9-001271a_25047a13-63cc-4cd4-a5f0-e40191cebaf4.jpg?v=1792149404
goad-london-288-se17-walworth-road-town-hall-library-coal-depot-1901-c1971-map-p-9-001272
Goad London 288—SE17—Walworth Road—Town Hall—Library—Coal depot 1901 (c1971) map

Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 288 [Walworth Road, railway coal depot, Southwark Town Hall and Newington Public Library — uncoloured outline]

Goad's uncoloured outline fire insurance plan of London, sheet 288, covers Walworth Road (SE17) around Southwark Town Hall and Newington Public Library, which appear here under their original printed labels. Together they form today's Walworth Town Hall, which opened as Newington Vestry Hall in 1865, was unroofed by fire in March 2013 and reopened at the turn of 2025 with workspace, community rooms and a café. On the sheet, undated pasted changes run along Walworth Road opposite them, south of Amelia Street and Larcom Street, and on Browning Street, where Robert Browning was baptised in its chapel. A separate Baptist Chapel is labelled between Heygate Street and Wansey Street; the plan also names the Midland Railway coal depot and the South Eastern and Chatham Railway. Later coloured revisions identify the London Borough of Southwark municipal offices and record motor-related uses and clearance. Made for fire insurance, outline plans of this kind show footprints and plots with less occupancy and risk detail than the coloured plans, and they took pasted overlays to record new uses, demolition and rebuilding. East Street is home to the market that Walworth calls The Lane, which has been trading officially since 1880 and is still busy six days a week. St Mark's was built in the 1860s, damaged in the Second World War and later declared redundant. Later coloured revisions of this plan record a playground and housing on the former church site, as well as the consolidation of neighbouring plots. Numbered shop and residential plots and the South Eastern and Chatham Railway complete the outline. Outline plans of this kind served fire insurance assessment, recording streets, footprints and plot divisions with less occupancy and risk detail than the coloured plans. The baths, which opened in 1898 and were a celebrated boxing venue, closed in 1978. The baths and the Southwark Manor Place refuse depot beside them were bought in 2013 by Notting Hill Housing, now Notting Hill Genesis, and turned into 272 homes and workspace, with the listed bathhouse retained. It shows a playground and housing on the former St Mark's Church site, with neighbouring plots consolidated around the baths and municipal services.
