Named climats, including Vaudésir, Valmur, Grenouille, Les Clos and Blanchot, are graded as “têtes de premiers crus”, premiers, deuxièmes and troisièmes crus, recording an interwar commercial hierarchy before the Chablis AOC of 1938. Graphically, the map is remarkably forward-looking. Eschewing dense topographical detail, it translates this complex geography into broad fields of salmon, orange, green and yellow, whose interlocking outlines form a vivid patchwork. Colour functions decoratively and analytically, making the hierarchy legible while giving the image the bold, almost abstract character of a modern infographic. Produced nearly two decades before Abercrombie and Forshaw’s celebrated London “potato map”, it strikingly anticipates that design’s organic colour-zoning and visual economy.
