Here the sheet shows the Times and Observer premises with casting, machine and paper-storage spaces, alongside printing works, newspaper premises and the Associated Newspapers garage. The presses have gone, with The Times leaving for Gray's Inn Road and, in 1986, for Wapping. Apothecaries' Hall on Blackfriars Lane, which dates from 1672 and is the City's oldest livery hall, still houses the Society of Apothecaries. The Mermaid Theatre at Puddle Dock, Bernard Miles's playhouse of 1959, is now a conference venue, and Blackfriars Station, beside the Blackfriars Bridge approach, was rebuilt by 2012 with platforms spanning the river. The sheet was drawn to assess fire risk and kept current with pasted overlays recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. It carries vacancy annotations dated November 1970, which are its latest dated correction. It was resurveyed and reissued in November 1941, with a 1949 copyright date, and the key plans acquired with the group were corrected as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include New Bridge Street, Pilgrim Street, Ludgate Broadway, Apothecary Street, Carter Lane, Church Entry, Friar Street, St Andrew's Hill, Queen Victoria Street and Upper Thames Street.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-9-001169a_dad3e82f-e42e-4b64-9df2-fef8c75cb68c.jpg?v=1792149145
goad-london-8-ec4-ludgate-circus-ludgate-hill-old-bailey-1960-1970-map-p-9-001176
Goad London 8—EC4—Ludgate Circus—Ludgate Hill—Old Bailey 1960 (1970) map

Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 8 [Ludgate Hill, Ludgate Circus, Old Bailey and Farringdon Street]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 8, covers Ludgate Circus and Farringdon Street (EC4) from the days when the railway still rode over the street. The Holborn Viaduct Station railway approaches dominate the sheet, with railway arches and workshops beneath them. The viaduct and bridge across Ludgate Hill were demolished in 1990 so that the line could run in tunnel to City Thameslink, and their removal cleared a major obstruction. On Farringdon Street, the Congregational Memorial Hall of 1875, where the Labour Party was founded in 1900, came down in 1968. Caroone House replaced it in 1972 and was itself demolished in 2004, to be followed by 5 Fleet Place in 2007. The sheet also names the Sun Life Assurance offices, a London Electricity Board substation, Hillgate House and Modern Court. The plan was compiled for fire-risk assessment and kept up to date with pasted overlays recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and new building. Its later vacancy annotations, of November 1970, are the latest dated correction. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in November 1960, with a 1960 copyright date, and it belongs to a group whose key plans were still being corrected in October 1970 and March 1971. The school moved east along the river in 1986, and its Embankment building of 1883, which still has the school's name over the door, became part of J.P. Morgan's office and conference complex. Unilever House, finished in 1933, is still Unilever's, whereas in the sheet's day the Spicers offices on New Bridge Street housed the paper makers taken over by Reed in 1963. The Blackfriars Station subway, Blackfriars underpass and slip-road overlays record the remaking of the riverfront road system beside the school and large commercial buildings. The station itself was rebuilt in 2009-12 to span the River Thames. The plan was kept current for insurers assessing property and fire risk, and it carries pasted revisions recording changed uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding, though none of them is dated. The Press Association, Times Newspapers and the Observer, whose premises appear on the sheet, have all since left. St Bride's is shown in its restored, roofed form, which records the reconstruction rededicated in December 1957. The Foundation building, where the sheet records printing instruction and social facilities, survives as St Bride Foundation, whose library and print workshops preserve this vanished trade. Chronicle House has been demolished to make way for the new City law courts and police headquarters in Salisbury Square.
