Close by stood Peabody Square's housing and the Ophthalmic Hospital, which was founded in 1857 as the South London Ophthalmic Hospital and closed in 1980. Its site now holds London South Bank University's McLaren House residence, which opened in 1994. The St George's Circus obelisk of 1771, which is named on the sheet, was removed in 1897. From 1905 it stood in front of the old Bethlem Hospital, which later became the Imperial War Museum, until its return in 1998. Pasted overlays kept these insurers' risk plans abreast of changing occupiers, altered buildings, clearance and redevelopment. The printed base heading is dated June 1889, with a 1950 copyright date. The latest dated correction is a vacancy note of March 1971 at 11–13 Rushworth Street, and a key plan acquired with the group also records corrections to March 1971.
