Close by stood Peabody Square's housing and the Ophthalmic Hospital, which was founded in 1857 as the South London Ophthalmic Hospital and closed in 1980. Its site now holds London South Bank University's McLaren House residence, which opened in 1994. The St George's Circus obelisk of 1771, which is named on the sheet, was removed in 1897. From 1905 it stood in front of the old Bethlem Hospital, which later became the Imperial War Museum, until its return in 1998. Pasted overlays kept these insurers' risk plans abreast of changing occupiers, altered buildings, clearance and redevelopment. The printed base heading is dated June 1889, with a 1950 copyright date. The latest dated correction is a vacancy note of March 1971 at 11–13 Rushworth Street, and a key plan acquired with the group also records corrections to March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Waterloo Road, Webber Street, Webber Row, Ufford Street, Gray Street, Boundary Row, Pocock Street, Rushworth Street, Glasshill Street, King's Bench Street, King James Street, Borough Road and Westminster Bridge Road.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-9-001260a_bbc97eb7-cee0-4ae0-8a4c-7492f73d14cf.jpg?v=1792149376
goad-london-272b-se1-southwark-royal-eye-hospital-webber-street-1889-1971-map-p-9-001261
Goad London 272B—SE1—Southwark—Royal Eye Hospital—Webber Street 1889 (1971) map

Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 272B [Blackfriars Road, Waterloo Road, Webber Street and the Royal Eye Hospital]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 272B, covers Blackfriars Road in Southwark (SE1), and it shows the Royal Eye Hospital in its last decade. The hospital's clinical and research buildings at St George's Circus closed in 1980, and London South Bank University's McLaren House student residence replaced them in 1994, as specialist medicine yielded to student housing. The David Greig premises shown here belonged to the family grocery chain, which was sold in 1972 and folded into Key Markets by 1976. The Letraset Ltd printing premises shown on the sheet housed the transfer-lettering firm, which was founded in 1959. The surrounding printers, engineers and bronze foundry show how closely printing sat alongside other manufacturing trades in this part of Southwark. Letraset's rub-down letters allowed designers to compose headlines and artwork by hand, a method largely superseded by digital fonts and desktop publishing in the 1990s. The sheet also shows the Salvation Army Blackfriars Hostel, Peabody Square, Friars House and the London Electrical Company warehouses. These plans were drawn for fire underwriters and revised with pasted slips as uses changed, layouts were altered and buildings came down or went up. The printed base heading is dated June 1889, with a 1950 copyright date. The latest dated corrections are from March 1971, when the Webber Street/Barons Place block 2659 was marked vacant, and a key plan acquired with the group also records corrections to March 1971.
