Scholl's elastic-stocking factory was the footcare firm's London headquarters from 1930 until its takeover in the late 1980s. In the sheet's day it stood by the Woodhouse Hulme meat preparation and distributing premises, cold storage and the Allied Breweries premises. Those brewery premises were the old Cannon Brewery, which stopped brewing in 1955, housed Allied until the late 1980s and became Brewery Square in 2002. This unusually varied mix shows that St John Street then made and distributed everyday necessities beside housing at Grimthorpe House and education in the City University annexes. The university was chartered in 1966, joined the University of London in 2016 and merged with St George's in 2024. The plans were made for assessing property and fire risk, and they were amended with pasted slips recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The last dated correction on this sheet is March 1970. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in June 1944, with a 1950 copyright date, and the key plans acquired with it carry corrections as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Corporation Row, Percival Street, Woodbridge Street, Agdon Street, Compton Street and Aylesbury Street.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-9-001138a_41dc2f10-8f3d-4a22-a234-549f331afb25.jpg?v=1792090161
goad-london-131-ec1-clerkenwell-goswell-road-compton-street-1936-1970-map-p-9-001139
Goad London 131—EC1—Clerkenwell—Goswell Road—Compton Street 1936 (1970) map

Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 131 [Clerkenwell: Goswell Road, Compton Street, Dallington Street and Percival Street]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 131, covers Goswell Road and Compton Street (EC1) and catches working-class housing at its changeover. The sheet shows Compton Buildings, which were artisans' dwellings of 1871–7 with 371 flats. They reached the end of their leases in 1970, the year of the sheet's last dated correction, and Islington's Triangle estate replaced them in 1970–6. Beside the older commercial frontages, the sheet also records the blocks of post-war redevelopment, namely Tompion House, Earnshaw House, Grimthorpe House and Grayle House. Tompion House and Earnshaw House of 1946–9 were named after the clockmakers Tompion and Earnshaw, and Grimthorpe House was the LCC's 128-flat block of 1950–2. The LCC school shown on Compton Street, built in 1880–1, has been SS Peter and Paul Roman Catholic primary since 1978, and the Liverpool Shoe Company warehouse is also named. Printers and bookbinders around Northburgh Street and Goswell Road, a clothing factory and stores for graphic products and business machines reveal the commercial work behind the housing. Northburgh Street's later role in Clerkenwell's design economy is exemplified by NaughtOne's furniture showroom in the Old Trading House, a converted Victorian warehouse. The plans were kept for fire-risk assessment, and they carry pasted overlays recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The last dated correction on this sheet is March 1970. The sheet was reissued in July 1936, with a 1950 copyright date, and key plans acquired with the group were corrected as late as October 1970 and March 1971.
