The sheet shows hat and gown factories on Great Pulteney Street, a shirt factory and woollen warehouses around Golden Square. Clothes were then made and stocked here as well as sold, behind streets now better known for restaurants. Granada Group Ltd then occupied Nos 34–36 Golden Square, a wool merchants' block of 1914 that is now M&C Saatchi's, and Jaeger Ltd's showroom is also named. The Police Section House shown on Broadwick Street is Trenchard House of 1938–40. On Sherwood Street, the Regent Palace Hotel annexe served Europe's largest hotel of 1915, which closed in 2006 and was largely demolished for Quadrant 3. The annexe itself was converted into Quadrant 4 apartments in 2017, retaining its street façades. Goad's plans were drawn to assess property and fire risk, and they were updated with pasted overlays recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The latest dated correction, October 1970, marks a vacancy at the corner of Lexington Street and Brewer Street. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in November 1948, with a 1948 copyright date, and the key plan acquired with this group records corrections to October 1970. Other streets on the sheet include Carnaby Street, Beak Street, Marshall Street, Bridle Lane, Upper John Street, Lower John Street, Great Windmill Street and Peter Street.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-9-001086a_c1c8febb-9579-4e26-a083-ad41638f9620.jpg?v=1792148975
goad-london-248-se1-southwark-nelson-square-blackfriars-rd-1956-1971-old-map-p-9-001234
Goad London 248—SE1—Southwark—Nelson Square—Blackfriars Rd 1956 (1971) old map

Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 248 [Southwark: Nelson Square, Blackfriars Road and Great Suffolk Street, with Newington and Kennington insets]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 248, covers Nelson Square, Blackfriars Road, Union Street and Great Suffolk Street in Southwark, with Newington and Kennington insets (SE1, SE11 and SE17). Nelson Square was laid out around 1807, and Shelley lodged there in 1814, but the square lost its terraces to bombing. On this sheet the square is reshaped by Southwark's council blocks of 1956–64, namely Rowland Hill House, Vaughan House and Helen Gladstone House, which still stand today. In the Kennington inset, the sheet records substantial housing redevelopment, with Cottington Close replacing the older street-and-plot arrangement. The sheet also names Pakeman House, the Police Section House, Brutus Court and the Southern Region Railway arches, as well as the London Trustee Savings Bank, which later merged into Lloyds TSB. Sawmilling, joinery, engineering and storage premises around Great Suffolk Street and the railway arches show the productive work among Southwark's housing. The Union Theatre's later home in the Old Union Yard Arches on Union Street exemplifies the reuse of this railway fabric for culture and leisure. Goad's plans were made to assess property and fire risk, and they took pasted overlays recording changed uses, demolition and rebuilding. Premises in the Newington inset are marked vacant in May 1968, and the latest dated correction, of March 1971, is a vacancy note on the north side of Hurlbutt Place. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in January 1956, with a 1956 copyright date, and the key plan acquired with the group records corrections to March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Surrey Row, Pocock Street, Crampton Street, Newington Butts and Kennington Lane.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-9-001234a_2bcec49c-ddd7-4b4f-8619-96592ea2c198.jpg?v=1792149309
