Behind the boutiques it shows gown factories, woollen premises and a glove factory, evidence of the making and storage work that then went on behind shopping streets now given over to retail and leisure. Carnaby Street itself was pedestrianised in October 1973. Frank Matcham's Palladium of 1910 is still a working theatre on Argyll Street, and Liberty and Marks & Spencer's Pantheon store on Oxford Street both trade on. Marshall Street Baths, opened in 1931, closed in 1997 and reopened in 2010 as a leisure centre, whereas the Academy Cinema, then London's leading art-house, closed in 1986 and was demolished in 1989. The Academy's basement ballroom at 165 Oxford Street was the Marquee Club's first home, from 1958 to 1964, and the Rolling Stones made their first live appearance here on 12 July 1962. The map retains the cinema and ballroom, but the Marquee had moved to Wardour Street before the final revision. The London Electricity Board Western Substation is also marked. Goad's plans were compiled to assess property and fire risk, and they were kept current with pasted overlays recording changes of use, altered layouts, demolition and new building. The latest dated correction, October 1970, is a first-floor vacancy note at 51 Great Marlborough Street. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in September 1946, with a 1950 copyright date, and the key plan acquired with the group records corrections to October 1970. Other streets on the sheet include Poland Street, Marshall Street, Newburgh Street, Ganton Street and Broadwick Street.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-9-001090a_e49c75da-efca-4dc0-9d0c-011b8ddb1cf4.jpg?v=1792148981
goad-london-230-w1-marylebone-oxford-circus-regent-st-oxford-st-1952-1968-map-p-9-001099
Goad London 230—W1—Marylebone—Oxford Circus—Regent St—Oxford St 1952 (1968) map

Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 230 [Oxford Circus, Oxford Street, Regent Street and Peter Robinson]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 230, covers Oxford Circus (W1), where Peter Robinson's department store then held the corner that Topshop's flagship later occupied. The flagship was there from 1994 until early 2021, and IKEA followed from 1 May 2025. That succession shows the changing forms of mass-market shopping, while the gown factories and cloth warehouses that then stood behind Oxford Street reveal its less visible manufacturing and wholesale economy. At 48 Margaret Street, however, the map's clothing-trade labels conceal the Speakeasy, the musicians' club of 1966–78 where the Jimi Hendrix Experience performed on 19 January 1967. Its address is identifiable, but the club itself is not named or recorded as such. C&A Modes, which had been in Britain since 1922, closed all 109 of its British stores in 2000–01, and the Midland Bank was renamed HSBC in June 1999. These working sheets were compiled to assess property and fire risk, and they were kept current with pasted overlays recording changes of use, altered layouts, demolition and new building. The latest dated correction identified here is a vacancy note behind 233–235 Oxford Street, dated November 1968. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in September 1952, with a 1952 copyright date, and a key plan covering this area, acquired with the same group of maps, records corrections to October 1970.
