Originally issued in 88 parts between 1838 and 1840, they show in extraordinary detail the elevations of London's main commercial thoroughfares of the time. The LTS dates parts 1-36 as having been issued in 1838, parts 37-79 in 1839 and parts 80-88 in 1840. The Street Views, which served both as a street guide and a trade directory, were clearly devised as an advertising medium. As well as showing detailed elevations of all the houses and other buildings on both sides of each street, each View includes details of many of the businesses trading from the street. Each elevation is accompanied by a map prominently showing the street in relation to its neighbourhood, and a vignette view of either the street itself, a famous building upon it, or a particular shop or business (presumably as a paid advertisement). The accompanying text includes numerous further trade adverts, as well as fascinating descriptions of the character of the street itself and its neighbouring streets.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-6-107780a_5083dfb5-9941-4cc6-b81d-a9bde43864f3.jpg?v=1753354531
goad-map-w1-poland-gt-marlborough-carnaby-broadwick-marshall-st-fouberts-pl-1946-p-9-000036
GOAD MAP.W1.Poland Gt Marlborough Carnaby Broadwick Marshall St Fouberts Pl 1946

'Poland Street; Great Marlborough Street; Carnaby Street; Ramillies Street; Broadwick Street; Marshall Street; Foubert's Place; Ganton Street; Argyll Street' (W1)

These very scarce maps were prepared by the civil engineering firm Charles Goad and Co for insurance and related purposes. The circulation of these plans amongst insurance companies, fire brigades and other interested parties was strictly controlled by Goad on a rental basis, and apparently never sold. These maps were revised and updated through to 1948 to reflect the influence of the Second World War between 1939 and 1945 (Buildings damaged or destroyed by bombs are marked green). They provide a historical insight into the buildings of central London in the immediate post-war period, prior to the substantial rebuilding and redevelopment seen in subsequent decades.
