Their new roads, relief roads and junctions are drawn in red over a detailed Ordnance Survey base, from long routes on the western and eastern edges of the town to new links and junctions threaded through the historic centre. The proposals were fiercely debated, and most of the inner relief roads were never built, which is a large part of why the medieval street pattern survives today. Reproduced by Entwistle Thorpe & Co., it is a substantial and readable record of a turning point in the city's planning.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-7-028560a_2546e7a8-d45e-4d63-862f-cdc1c3142e6f.jpg?v=1792148861
cambridge-university-buildings-land-development-sites-holford-wright-1950-map-p-7-028561
Cambridge University—buildings, land & development sites—Holford/Wright 1950 map

'University buildings and the Central Area // Land and buildings in use by the University // Possible sites for University and College extensions'

Cambridge University's estate in 1950 is mapped three ways on these companion colour plans from Holford and Wright's Cambridge Planning Proposals. The first picks out in red every building used by the University and colleges in the central area; the second distinguishes departments likely to expand, colleges, playing fields and gardens; the third marks the sites that the colleges and University owned or hoped to acquire for extensions, including the open land west of the Backs. Much of the post-war University, from Churchill and Robinson Colleges to the West Cambridge site, was later built in that western area, which makes the set a revealing forecast for anyone with a Cambridge connection. Holford and Wright's 1950 scheme numbered a bus station, a broad new Guildhall Street, a New Emmanuel Street, sections of relief road, a new bridge near Magdalene, shops and a garage near Park Street, and an eventual new bridge at Mill Lane. Few were built as drawn: the Lion Yard redevelopment of the 1970s took a different course, and the bridges never came. The drawing remains a beautifully detailed portrait of the colleges, streets and river as they stood in 1950, and a sobering glimpse of what nearly changed.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-7-028562a_29053e8d-014b-48b9-9990-4922e9b1dd20.jpg?v=1792148861
milton-cambridgeshire-a-possible-development-plan-holford-wright-1950-map-p-7-028564
Milton, Cambridgeshire—A Possible Development Plan—Holford & Wright 1950 map

'A possible development plan for Milton'

Milton, the village just north of Cambridge, is shown in charming detail on this 1950 plan for its possible expansion, with new roads, suggested buildings and green verges laid among the existing cottages, church, school and Milton Hall, then the offices of the Eastern Electricity Board. Gravel workings, a tile works, a sewage farm and the River Cam give it a working rural setting, while the planners' new public open space and recreation ground knit the village together. From Holford and Wright's Cambridge Planning Proposals, it shows Milton before its large post-war estates and the A14, and invites comparison with the village today, where the old gravel pits are now Milton Country Park.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-7-028564a_7f75203a-55b0-463f-b101-e1daf40f41d4.jpg?v=1792148876
