Jewellery workshops, engraving and photo-lithographic printing then packed the premises around Hatton Garden and Saffron Hill. This was the production behind the shopfronts, in a district where jewellery making and dealing still underpin the local economy. St Etheldreda's Church, the Bishops of Ely's chapel of the 1280s, has been Catholic again since 1874, and Ely Place remains gated and watched by its own beadle. Dickens housed the Plornishes in Bleeding Heart Yard and Fagin in Field Lane below Saffron Hill, where the former Punch printworks is now flats. The Atlantic House name survives on Holborn Viaduct as Hogan Lovells' London office, and the sheet also marks a GPO garage. Goad's plans were kept for assessing property and fire risk, and they were updated with pasted overlays recording changes of use, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in April 1950, with a 1950 copyright date. Its latest dated correction is September 1969, and key plans acquired with the group were corrected as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Johnson Matthey, refiners to the Bank of England, had been here since 1822 before moving its head office out in 1975 and selling up in 1998. Yet the trade stayed, and nearly 300 jewellery businesses work here today. When the sheet was in use, Omega watch workshops sat among substantial printing and engraving premises, including the Sun Engraving Company and the Bradbury Agnew printing works. Their neighbours then also included the Cable and Wireless workshops and laboratories and the post office in Global House. On Saffron Hill a 1930s print works became the Ziggurat, which has been flats since 1997, and its industrial floor space turned into sought-after homes, while Leather Lane still keeps its market. The plans were made to assess property and fire risk, and they were kept current with pasted slips recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The last dated correction on this sheet, from March 1970, notes a vacancy at 14 Hatton Wall. Resurveyed and reissued in June 1956, with a 1956 copyright date, the sheet belongs to a group whose key plans were still being corrected in October 1970 and March 1971.
