It marks the summit of the submarine volcano Empedocles. The island has risen above sea level four times in recorded history, most notably in July 1831, when it dramatically emerged and remained visible for nearly six months before subsiding once more. The two views illustrated here record that brief appearance. Although now submerged, the feature remains charted for navigational safety, as its summit lies only about 6 metres (20 feet) below the surface.
