Mainland Southeast Asia unfolds from southern China through French Indochina, Thailand and Burma to the long finger of Malaya, with Singapore at its tip. Railways and sea routes converge on the island, distances link the coastal ports and red symbols mark air and naval bases, while relief colouring picks out the mountain ranges. It appeared as a full-page colour map in Shūkan Asahi, the Asahi newspaper’s weekly, whose contents list it under that title.
