Japanese flags mark the territories claimed, bombs show the raids, and callout boxes and campaign reports catalogue the Allied warships claimed sunk or damaged, from Repulse off Malaya to the American fleet at Pearl Harbor, illustrated ship by ship. Near Hawaii, the carrier Lexington goes down on 12 January. In fact the submarine I-6 had torpedoed her sister ship Saratoga, which survived to fight again, while Lexington herself lasted until the Battle of the Coral Sea in May. A table of Imperial Headquarters’ claimed totals and the triumphant announcement of Singapore’s fall complete this double-page spread from Shūkan Asahi, 1 March 1942.
