On this sheet the Astoria is still a cinema and dance hall, not yet the concert venue Londoners remember. Its later rock history included Nirvana on 3 December 1989 and Radiohead's filmed concert of 27 May 1994, released as Live at the Astoria. It closed in 2009 and was demolished for the Crossrail works at Tottenham Court Road, which cleared neighbouring premises and reshaped this corner of Soho. The rebuilt Underground station gained Elizabeth line platforms in May 2022. The Hospital for Women, the world's first gynaecological hospital, closed in 1989, while St Patrick's Church remains in use. The House of St Barnabas, the homelessness charity that had been at 1 Greek Street since 1862, closed in January 2024, and Nascreno House is also marked. Film developing and printing, recording studios, gramophone-record premises and music publishers reveal the production trades behind Soho's entertainment venues. That role continues in a different form at Soho Square Studios, whose work now includes sound for film, television and games, as well as podcast production. Goad's plans were compiled to assess property and fire risk, and they were kept current with pasted overlays recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The latest dated correction, November 1970, is a vacancy note on premises north of Falconberg Court and east of Falconberg Mews. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in October 1944, with a 1950 copyright date, and the key plan acquired with the group records corrections to October 1970. Other streets on the sheet include Oxford Street, Frith Street, Bateman Street, Sutton Row and Manette Street.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-9-001094a_46cbd43b-a405-44ed-9f10-924b333d9fcf.jpg?v=1792148987
goad-london-197-wc2-wc1-st-giles-centre-point-charing-cross-road-1942-1970-map-p-9-001159
Goad London 197—WC2/WC1—St Giles—Centre Point—Charing Cross Road 1942 (1970) map

Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 197 [Charing Cross Road, New Oxford Street, Denmark Street and St Giles-in-the-Fields]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 197, covers St Giles and Denmark Street (WC2 and WC1), with Centre Point above Tin Pan Alley. Centre Point is labelled here as a 33-storey office tower, and Historic England dates it to 1961–66. An embodiment of the post-war office boom, it stood empty until 1975 and became apartments in 2018. St Giles Court government offices gave way in 2010 to Renzo Piano's Central Saint Giles. The A.B.C. 1 and A.B.C. 2 Cinemas, formerly the Saville Theatre, closed in 2024. Before its cinema conversion, the Saville hosted Brian Epstein's rock concerts: on 4 June 1967 the Jimi Hendrix Experience opened with Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, days after the album's release, with Paul McCartney and George Harrison in the audience. That concert phase had ended by the sheet's final revision. At 26 Denmark Street, the premises later housed the 12 Bar Club, which opened in 1994 and hosted Jeff Buckley, Adele and the Libertines. It closed at this address in 2015 during redevelopment, although the historic building survived and live music returned in 2022 as the Lower Third. The sheet also names St Giles-in-the-Fields Church, the Phoenix Theatre, Tottenham Court Road Underground Station and Philips Electrical offices. The music publishers and studios clustered around Denmark Street and Denmark Place reveal Tin Pan Alley's working music business as well as its later performance history. The trade survives in changed form at Regent Sounds, where the former recording studio at 4 Denmark Street became a specialist guitar shop. Made to assess fire risk, the plans were kept current with pasted overlays recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The latest dated correction, of September 1970, notes a house vacant on the north side of Denmark Place. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in September 1942, with a 1950 copyright date, and the key plans acquired with it carry corrections as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets include Charing Cross Road, Shaftesbury Avenue, New Oxford Street, St Giles Circus, St Giles High Street, Andrew Borde Street, Earnshaw Street, Bucknall Street, Dyott Street, Flitcroft Street, Phoenix Street, Stacey Street and New Compton Street.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-9-001159a_a2066d85-c950-4bae-a1eb-d0c5eac81a29.jpg?v=1792149116
