Gresham House, Palmerston House and the National Provincial Bank's Old Broad Street offices were cleared from 1970 for the tower, while the bank itself became National Westminster Bank on 1 January 1970. The tower was Britain's tallest building when it opened in 1981, and it is now Tower 42. St Ethelburga's Church, a medieval survivor of the Great Fire and the Blitz, was half destroyed by the IRA bomb of 24 April 1993 and reopened in 2002 as the Centre for Reconciliation and Peace. Hambros Bank, which was at 41 Bishopsgate until 1988, passed to Société Générale in 1998, and Barclays Bank and Kempson House are also named. The plans were drawn for fire-risk assessment, and they were kept current with pasted overlays recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in August 1941, with a 1949 copyright date, and its latest dated correction is August 1969. Key plans acquired with the group carry corrections as late as October 1970 and March 1971. The Commercial Union building and the P\u0026amp;O Building are marked under construction in August 1969, and their elevated walkways and plaza were then replacing the older pattern of premises. The P\u0026amp;O Building came down in 2007–08 to make way for Rogers's \"Cheesegrater\" of 2014. Demolition of the Commercial Union tower began in 2025 to make way for 1 Undershaft, which was consented in 2024 at almost 310 metres. St Helen's Bishopsgate, the City's largest surviving parish church and once Shakespeare's, was wrecked by the bombs of 1992 and 1993 and restored by Quinlan Terry by 1995. Baring Brothers had been at 8 Bishopsgate since 1806 when it collapsed in 1995. Midland Bank became HSBC in 1999, and The Chartered Bank merged into Standard Chartered in 1969.
