The sheet shows the London Central Meat Market surrounded and underpinned by cold stores and railway goods depots, with Grand Avenue, East Poultry Avenue, Lindsey Street and Long Lane among the streets around it. The sidings beneath the market closed in the 1960s, and in 2024 the City abandoned the move to Dagenham, with traders staying until at least 2028. Fabric, which has been in the renovated Metropolitan Cold Stores on Charterhouse Street since 1999, stands for the nightlife that followed. The LCC Smithfield Technical Institute taught butchery and refrigeration until it closed in the 1980s, and across Charterhouse Square the Charterhouse almshouse opened to the public in 2017. Insurers rated property and fire risk from these plans, which were kept current with pasted overlays recording changed uses, altered layouts, demolition and new building. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in February 1960, with a 1960 copyright date, and it carries a latest dated correction of September 1969. Key plans acquired with the group carry corrections as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Scholl's elastic-stocking factory was the footcare firm's London headquarters from 1930 until its takeover in the late 1980s. In the sheet's day it stood by the Woodhouse Hulme meat preparation and distributing premises, cold storage and the Allied Breweries premises. Those brewery premises were the old Cannon Brewery, which stopped brewing in 1955, housed Allied until the late 1980s and became Brewery Square in 2002. This unusually varied mix shows that St John Street then made and distributed everyday necessities beside housing at Grimthorpe House and education in the City University annexes. The university was chartered in 1966, joined the University of London in 2016 and merged with St George's in 2024. The plans were made for assessing property and fire risk, and they were amended with pasted slips recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The last dated correction on this sheet is March 1970. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in June 1944, with a 1950 copyright date, and the key plans acquired with it carry corrections as late as October 1970 and March 1971. The Gate has been the headquarters of the Order of St John since the 1870s. It holds the Order's museum, which was renovated in 2010, while the St John Ambulance Brigade headquarters has been rebuilt on St John's Lane. St John's Church was burnt out in May 1941 and rebuilt by 1958 over its twelfth-century crypt, and it keeps the Cloister Gardens from that restoration. Nearby, the sheet records Unilever's maintenance works, GPO engineers' offices, lift engineers, printers and non-ferrous-metal storage, revealing what was then a practical industrial setting. Since the 1980s that setting has turned to offices, design studios and showrooms, a change of work in a district long known for skilled trades. The plans were compiled to assess fire risk, and they carry pasted slips recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The last dated correction on this sheet is March 1970. The sheet was reissued in July 1936, with a 1950 copyright date, and it belongs to a group whose key plans were still being corrected in October 1970 and March 1971. The Charterhouse, Thomas Sutton's almshouse of 1611 on a Carthusian site of 1371, appears here with its Pensioners' Court and The Green. It still houses over forty Brothers, and it opened its museum in January 2017. St Bartholomew's Medical College, shown with its medical laboratories and lecture hall, merged into Queen Mary in 1995 as Barts and The London, which keeps the Charterhouse Square campus. North of Clerkenwell Road, by contrast, clothing factories and textile and leather trades then filled the blocks beside the Allied Breweries garage, marking a sharp division between the district's working and institutional halves. The plans were compiled to assess property and fire risk, and they carry pasted overlays recording changes of use, altered layouts, demolition and new building.
