The roundabout, the sunken Old Street Underground Station booking hall and the pedestrian subways appear as 1960s work pasted onto the 1954 base, and they record the remaking of a crossroads later nicknamed "Silicon Roundabout". The sheet shows Sutton Model Dwellings, which were built in 1911 from William Sutton's bequest for low-rented housing, surviving around the roundabout together with General Post Office offices, Paterson Court and Hudson's House. Printers, clothing and quilt factories around Corsham Street, and engineers and tool makers around Brunswick Place and Cranwood Street, show the manufacturing economy that preceded the technology cluster. Today the same district is associated with software and digital-media businesses, a change from the making of physical goods to the provision of digital services. The roundabout did not last, however. Transport for London began removing it in 2019, and since January 2021 traffic has run two ways through a redesigned junction. Made to assess property and fire risk, these plans were kept up to date with pasted overlays recording new uses and rebuilding. The latest dated corrections on this sheet are March 1970 vacancy annotations. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in June 1954, with a 1954 copyright date, and the key plans acquired with it carry corrections as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include East Road, Peerless Street, Baldwin Street, Brunswick Place, Cranwood Street, Corsham Street, Chart Street and Staff Street.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-9-001153a_4167fc12-f5cd-40f5-ab01-5f113f9b4fdd.jpg?v=1792149099
goad-london-147-ec1-n1-shoreditch-old-st-pitfield-st-charles-sq-1938-1970-map-p-9-001154
Goad London 147—EC1/N1—Shoreditch—Old St—Pitfield St—Charles Sq 1938 (1970) map

Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 147 [Shoreditch: Old Street, Pitfield Street, Charles Square and the London College of Furniture]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 147, covers Shoreditch's Charles Square, Old Street and Pitfield Street (EC1 and N1). Here the London College of Furniture, the furniture district's own trade school, then stood among clothing factories, warehouses and telephone-engineering premises, whose survivors now define Shoreditch's character. The college began in 1899 as the Shoreditch Technical Institute, housed in the Haberdashers' almshouses of 1825 on Pitfield Street, which are now flats, and it left for Commercial Road in 1971. Aske Gardens, which have been public since 1898, became Joe White Gardens in 2023. The sheet also names Shoreditch Fire Station, which is still operational, the City University Cranwood Annexe, the General Post Office Telephone Engineering Centre, and West Court and East Court housing. The plan was kept current for fire-risk assessment with pasted slips recording new uses, altered layouts and rebuilding, and its latest correction, dated March 1970, marks Centre Court tenements under construction. The sheet was reissued in July 1938, with a 1950 copyright date, and key plans acquired with the group were corrected as late as October 1970 and March 1971.
