On a printed base headed July 1922, with a 1950 copyright date, this edition preserves smaller industrial plots and the works of the Ardath Tobacco Company, makers of State Express 555 cigarettes. Among its post-war amendments is a British Road Services garage. The surrounding printing, furniture, tobacco, paper and plastics premises reveal a broader manufacturing and warehousing district beyond Ardath's works. The later shift to offices and car parking changed the character of whole groups of small industrial plots, as the replacement edition described below makes clear. Wesley's Chapel of 1778 is still a working church, with Wesley's house and grave. The sheet also names Royal London House, Essex County Council offices and the City of London Territorial Regiment headquarters. It catches renamings in progress too, as Paradise Street became Clere Street, Castle Street became Epworth Street and Hill Street became Bonhill Street. Kept by insurers rating property and fire risk, the sheet carries pasted overlays recording changes of use, altered layouts, demolition and new building, and vacancy notes of June 1954 are its latest dated correction. The replacement edition, reissued in June 1956, reorganised these blocks as larger offices and car parking, with Standard House and changed uses on the former tobacco site. That reissue ended this sheet's regular updating in about 1956. Other streets on the sheet include Tabernacle Street, Paul Street, Worship Street, Wilson Street, Christopher Street and Platina Street.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-9-001148a_6ae0a1d1-bbdb-4f20-84e4-ac28590500ee.jpg?v=1792149091
goad-london-142-ec2-ec1-wesley-s-chapel-finsbury-sq-worship-st-1956-1970-map-p-9-001149
Goad London 142—EC2/EC1—Wesley's Chapel—Finsbury Sq—Worship St 1956 (1970) map

Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 142 [City Road, Finsbury Square, Worship Street and Wesley's Chapel — later copy]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 142, covers Wesley's Chapel, Finsbury Square and Worship Street (EC2 and EC1) in the June 1956 reissue. This reissue superseded the July 1922 base, an example of which is marked "obsolete". On this sheet, larger offices, Standard House, car parking and changed occupancies replace the tobacco premises and smaller industrial plots. Royal London House, then the Royal London Mutual Insurance Society's headquarters, became the Montcalm Royal London House hotel in 2016, so the story runs from industry to offices and on to hospitality. Wesley's Chapel and museum, dating from 1778, is still a working church beside Wesley's house. The sheet also names Singer sewing-machine premises and the City of London Regiment headquarters. Kept for insurers assessing property and fire risk, the sheet carries pasted overlays recording changes of use, altered layouts, demolition and new building. Its later amendments include March 1970 annotations and a construction note in block 1273, the latest dated correction. Resurveyed and reissued in June 1956, with a 1956 copyright date, the sheet belongs to a group whose key plans were still being corrected in October 1970 and March 1971. It shows the quarter in the days when clothing manufacture and a Cowper Street optical-goods factory stood among schools and public offices. The Central Foundation Schools have been on Cowper Street since 1869 and survive as Central Foundation Boys' School. Shoreditch County Court on Leonard Street occupied the 1881 building of Finsbury Technical College, which was England's first, and the court itself closed in 2006. The Board of Trade Registration Offices on City Road housed Companies House from 1963 until it moved to Cardiff in 1976. On the sheet, S. Greenman Ltd's cabinet sundries and the Post Office Training School are a world away from the technology and media businesses now filling Shoreditch. Made to assess property and fire risk, the plans were kept current with pasted overlays recording new uses and rebuilding, and the latest dated corrections here are March 1970 vacancy annotations. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in June 1946, with a 1950 copyright date, and key plans acquired with the group were corrected as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Here, printers, clothing factories and textile warehouses stood alongside tea-packing and blending works, cabinetmakers' supplies and furniture workshops. Ridgways' tea-packing and blending works belonged to Queen Victoria's tea blenders, who were granted a royal warrant in 1886 and whose Her Majesty's Blend is still sold. St Michael's Church on Mark Street, designed by James Brooks and dating from 1865, closed in 1964 and was an architectural salvage showroom from 1978 to 2019. In the sheet's day, Greenman's cabinetmakers' supplies, Victoria Chambers, the Post Office Training School and furniture factories and other furniture premises filled a district that media and technology later took over. The sheet was amended for fire-risk assessment with pasted overlays recording new uses, altered layouts and rebuilding.
