At 1:60,000, Vallot distinguishes roads open to all vehicles, light-car roads, cart tracks, mule paths, good footpaths, itinerary directions and precarious or dangerous tracks; principal routes are emphasized in heavy line. Glaciers and 60-metre glacial contours appear in blue and high forest in green, with summits, cols, ridges, huts, churches, railways, rack railways and cableways carefully marked. The on-sheet note credits Vallot’s 1:50,000 Mont Blanc mapping, the Megève–Beaufort and Perret maps for France, Swiss Federal Topographic Service sheets and Italian Military Geographical Institute mapping. Vallot (1884–1953), son of pioneering topographer Henri Vallot, completed the family’s celebrated 1:20,000 survey and launched the Guide Vallot. Published separately in 1938, this practical synthesis translates that cartographic legacy into a portable map for mountain travellers. Preserved in its original printed Carte Vallot wrapper, manually inscribed in 1939.
