Prepared by the Ordnance Survey for the Royal Commission on London Traffic, it shows each system in its own colour or pattern, existing lines solid and authorised lines dotted, and superimposes in red the suggested new surface tramways and subways that would have joined them up. Pink marks the County of London and orange the far wider Greater London of the Metropolitan Police District. Dated December 1904 and published in 1905 at one inch to the mile, it is a superb reference for London's transport history and its suburbs.

'Royal Commission on London Traffic—Key to Tramway Plan'

London’s battle to bring trams into the West End is fought out on this colourful 1905 plan, offered together with the relevant text extract from the Royal Commission on London Traffic’s report. The plan sets twenty-five suggested routes in red across the gap between the capital’s separate tramway networks. Its printed reference identifies three of them as subways, and these are the broken red lines: Knightsbridge to Aldgate, Grosvenor Place and Hyde Park, and Aldersgate Street to the Post Office. Blue lines show the London County Council system, with its authorised but unbuilt lines dotted, among them the Kingsway tram subway under construction. Prepared by the Ordnance Survey at three inches to the mile for the Commission, the plan also carries its proposed east–west and north–south Main Avenues. The Kingsway subway opened in 1906; the Knightsbridge–Aldgate tunnel never did.
