The map illustrates the proposal of Colonel Frederick Trench (1775–1859), a British military officer and Tory MP, who in 1824 promoted the creation of a New Quay along the north side of  the Thames between Charing Cross and Blackfriars Bridge. Trench’s scheme envisioned merchant warehouses constructed beneath riverside terraces, linked by tunnels to main roads and markets such as Covent Garden. A key identifies the proposed commercial facilities and new access routes including a new Fruut \u0026amp; Flower Market.
