The first foldout, over a metre long, follows the river from the sea at Tynemouth and the Shields past the docks, staithes and yards of Jarrow, Hebburn, Wallsend and Dunston, through Newcastle and Gateshead to Blaydon, Newburn and Wylam, with the Commission’s own properties edged in red. The second is a longitudinal section along the centre line of the river, plotting the bed of the channel and the spring-tide levels of 1860 against those of 1928, the record of nearly seventy years of dredging; its reference points include Palmers’ graving dock at Jarrow, charted five years before the shipyard’s collapse led to the Jarrow March. Both are signed in print by the engineer R. F. Hindmarsh and kept together in their blue cloth booklet.
