The street was pedestrianised and given Chinese gates in the late 1980s. The Swiss Centre on the corner of Leicester Square and Wardour Street, a post-war landmark of 1966, was added to the sheet by correction. It was demolished in 2008 for the W London hotel development, which opened in 2011. The Empire Theatre, a cinema since 1928, and the Prince of Wales Theatre of 1937 both survive, and the Telephone Exchange is also named. At 33–37 Wardour Street, the basement club label marks the former Flamingo, whose celebrated 1957–67 period included Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames and the Jimi Hendrix Experience on 4 February 1967. By the final revision it had passed into other club identities, although basement club use remained on the map. When the square was remodelled in 2012, the Shakespeare Fountain of 1874 alone was kept. Goad's plans were drawn to assess property and fire risk, and they were corrected with pasted overlays recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. Vacancy annotations among these overlays are dated October 1970, which is the latest date on the sheet. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in October 1954, with a 1954 copyright date, and the key plan acquired with this group records corrections to October 1970. Other streets on the sheet include Shaftesbury Avenue, Coventry Street, New Coventry Street, Lisle Street, Rupert Street, Macclesfield Street, Leicester Street, Whitcomb Street, Oxendon Street and Panton Street.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-9-001083a_0f57c967-dcf2-4494-b75e-88f85ad1bcbb.jpg?v=1792148974
goad-london-219-w1-soho-wardour-berwick-old-compton-streets-1958-1970-map-p-9-001087
Goad London 219—W1—Soho—Wardour, Berwick & Old Compton Streets 1958 (1970) map

Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 219 [Soho: Wardour Street, Berwick Street, Old Compton Street and Shaftesbury Avenue]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 219, covers Soho around Wardour Street and Berwick Street (W1). The film laboratories and studios, cutting rooms and photo-engraving premises it records make the work behind the entertainment industry tangible. Wardour Street was the centre of the British film trade through the twentieth century, but by the century's end the big companies had gone, leaving independent post-production houses. The sheet also explicitly names the Marquee Club at 90 Wardour Street, its home from 1964 to 1988. The Who began their Tuesday residency on 24 November 1964, Pink Floyd played the Spontaneous Underground from 13 March 1966, and Led Zeppelin appeared on 18 October 1968 while still billed as the Yardbirds; Jimi Hendrix and David Bowie also played here. The club was operating when the sheet was last corrected, and its site later became Soho Lofts. At 59 Old Compton Street, the club-and-restaurant label marks the 2i's Coffee Bar, where Tommy Steele, Cliff Richard and musicians who became the Shadows helped launch British rock 'n' roll. It operated from 1956 to 1970, closing in the year of the final revision. The Wardour Garage car park beside Richmond Buildings, operated by Parking Managements Ltd in the sheet's day, became the Soho Hotel of 2004, which has its restaurant entrance on Flaxman Court. In this way a service site was given over to visitor accommodation. The sheet also names the Eros Hotel, the Swiss Hotel and the Police Offices, while Berwick Street's market, founded in 1778, still fills the street. Goad's plans were drawn to assess property and fire risk, and they were kept current with pasted overlays recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. On this sheet a vacancy annotation carries the latest date, October 1970. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in November 1958, with a 1958 copyright date, and the key plan acquired with this group records corrections to October 1970. Other streets on the sheet include Broadwick Street, Hopkins Street, Peter Street, Brewer Street, Old Compton Street, Great Windmill Street, Archer Street, Bourchier Street, Winnett Street, Rupert Street and Shaftesbury Avenue.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-9-001087a_4eba4540-afa7-4cb9-8c8a-823de2d11448.jpg?v=1792148976
goad-london-223b-w1-soho-noel-berwick-wardour-oxford-streets-1960-1970-map-p-9-001092
Goad London 223B—W1—Soho—Noel, Berwick, Wardour & Oxford Streets 1960 (1970) map

Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 223B [Soho: Oxford Street, Berwick Street, Wardour Street and Noel Street]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 223B, covers Soho's Oxford Street, Poland Street, Wardour Street and Berwick Street (W1), and it records the working Soho of rag trade and film. The sheet shows clothing factories and film vaults beside the Amalgamated Dental Company's dental-materials factory, so garments, film and specialist medical supplies all lay within a few blocks. Together they formed a productive economy far broader than today's shopping-and-restaurant Soho. Wardour Street, then the British film industry's headquarters street, has since lost its big companies, leaving post-production houses behind. Berwick Street market was founded in 1778 and still trades, and the street itself appeared on the cover of Oasis's (What's the Story) Morning Glory? in 1995. GPO offices and Waverley House are also marked. Goad's plans were kept for assessing property and fire risk, and they were amended with pasted overlays recording changes of use, altered layouts, demolition and new building. The latest dated correction, October 1970, records a building under construction at 10–11 D'Arblay Street, with gowns premises on the basement and first floor and flats above, showing new homes being fitted into the commercial district. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in November 1960, with a 1960 copyright date, and the key plan acquired with the group records corrections to October 1970. Twentieth Century Fox's Soho Square film offices, purpose-built in 1936, emptied when Fox left in 2020. The sheet shows small offices, film premises and stores filling the blocks around Great Chapel Street and Dean Street, where the Elizabeth line's entrance of 2022 replaced dense commercial fabric with transport infrastructure. From 1968 to 1981 St Anne's Court held Trident Studios, where the Beatles recorded Hey Jude and Bowie made Ziggy Stardust. Aston Webb's French Protestant Church of 1893 still serves its congregation, and Dryden Chambers and GPO offices are also marked. Goad's plans were kept to assess property and fire risk, and they were corrected with pasted overlays recording changes of use, altered layouts, demolition and new building.
