Red hatching marks the districts of the 1914 German Empire with Polish, French, Danish, Frisian, Lettish and Wendish majorities, from Posen and West Prussia to Lorraine and North Schleswig, while grey shading picks out the German-majority lands beyond the 1914 frontier in Austria and the borderlands of Bohemia, the Sudeten question two decades early. The names of the German peoples, Frieslanders, Westphalians, Thuringians and Upper Saxons among them, are lettered across the country in red. Not explained in the key is the red dash-dot line running from Belgium past Düsseldorf, Cassel and Wittenberg to the Oder: the old speech frontier between Low and High German, roughly the line linguists call the Benrath line, where ‘maken’ becomes ‘machen’, with ‘Low Germans’ lettered above it and ‘High Germans’ below. It even loops round the Upper Harz, whose mining towns, settled by miners from the Saxon Erzgebirge, spoke a High German dialect. Drawn by George Philip & Son as a folding supplement, it is a contemporary briefing for readers following the treaty debates.
