Within a few years it would be famous as ‘the Village’ of The Prisoner, Patrick McGoohan’s cult ITV series of 1967–68, in which a secret agent who resigns is abducted to a mysterious seaside community. Twenty-eight numbered points, matching labels fixed along the paths, lead walkers past the Pagoda, the Ghost Garden, the Dancing Tree, the Old Gold Mine, the Camera Obscura and the Lighthouse, while a note admits that ‘considerable tracts at the seaward end have not been explored within living memory’. A mermaid compass rose and Cardigan Bay fill the foreground, and Williams-Ellis’s own account of the estate is printed on the reverse.
