This early military adaptation of Ordnance Survey mapping addresses a practical security problem: helping troops unfamiliar with Belfast identify individual premises and navigate densely built neighbourhoods. Its 1:2,500 detail records individual houses, gardens, schools, wooded ground and the M2 motorway approaches, with a prominent numbered grid for unambiguous position reports and coordinating patrols. Compiled in September 1971 from the 1965 civilian survey and updated information, it captures north Belfast near the beginning of the Army’s prolonged deployment. The military reference grid and revisions distinguish it from the underlying civilian survey.
