It offers a direct comparison between Bankside's electricity-generating past and its present cultural role. Giles Gilbert Scott's building, which was designed for coal but built to burn oil, went up in two campaigns, in 1947–52 and 1958–63, and stopped generating in 1981. The St Christopher House outline marks the government office block of 1959, which has since been replaced by Bankside 1 2 3. Willow Wharf, Royal George Wharf, Queen's Wharf, Sunderland Wharf, Rose's Wharf, Crown Wharf, Travers Wharf and Phoenix Wharf then lined the River Thames. Outline editions were made for fire-risk assessment, and they give footprints and plot divisions rather than occupancies. The later coloured revisions, which were kept current with pasted slips, detail the boiler and turbine houses, the chimney and the oil storage. This outline edition was reissued in February 1950, and although pasted revisions are present, no correction on it carries a date. The key plans acquired with the group carry corrections as late as March 1971. It shows the boiler house and turbine house, the switch rooms and control room, and the chimney and fuel-oil tanks. The turbine house on the sheet compares directly with the Turbine Hall, which opened to art audiences in 2000, and the plan maps the machinery behind a building now known for exhibitions and visitors. Designed for coal but built to burn oil, the power station was completed in December 1963 and shut down in 1981. Inland of Willow, Queen's and Crown Wharves on the River Thames then stood St Christopher House, the office block of 1959 that was replaced by Bankside 1 2 3. Goad's plans were made to assess property and fire risk, and they were kept current with pasted slips. Here a riverside warehouse is labelled vacant in a May 1968 correction, and the latest correction, of March 1971, notes the printing works at Hopton Street and Sumner Street as vacated. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in February 1950, with a 1950 copyright date, and the key plans acquired with it were corrected as late as March 1971. This was the 1959 government office block whose long frontage walled off Bankside, and it was demolished for Bankside 123, where the Blue Fin Building of 2007 and new public routes now stand. The Ewer Street locomotive stabling point, which opened in 1901, served its last engine in 1961. Reissued in January 1956, this outline records streets, building footprints and plot divisions with less occupancy and risk detail than the coloured plans. It keeps the plot pattern around Lavington Street and Ewer Street, while later coloured revisions record government offices at St Christopher House, printing trades and varied occupancies beneath the railway arches. The sheet also names Tabard House, Solway House and the Southern Region Railway approaches. Goad's working plans were made to judge property and fire risk, and they took pasted overlays recording changed uses, demolition and rebuilding. No such overlays have been identified on this outline, and the key plan acquired with the group records corrections to March 1971. At the time, St Christopher House, the 1959 government office block, filled the ground beside printing works and railway goods storage. Its site is now Bankside 123, with the Blue Fin Building of 2007, which was built for IPC Media. The goods depot handled continental freight until 1960 and parcels until 1969, and it shared its site with the Ewer Street locomotive stabling point, which opened in 1901 and served its last engine in 1961. The sheet also records Southwark Offset's printing works, Thorburn Bain's paper and stationery warehouses, Tabard House, Lamson House and the Southern Region Railway arches. Goad's working plans were made to assess property and fire risk, and they were kept current with pasted overlays recording changed uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. On this sheet they update the old industrial plot pattern around Lavington Street, and the latest dated correction, of March 1971, labels Southwark Street premises near Granby House vacant.
