Colton, Joseph Hutchins

Joseph Hutchins Colton (1800-1893) was one of the leading American mapmakers between 1831 and 1890. Having initially purchased rights to others' maps, he issued his first atlas "Colton’s Atlas of the World" in two volumes in 1855 and 1856. In 1857 this work was reduced to a single volume under the title of "Colton’s General Atlas" which was published in a similar format in various editions until 1888. We stock maps from the 1863 edition, and also the smaller American maps of the States and Territories of the United States from "Colton's Condensed Octavo Atlas of the Union", published a year later in 1864.
