However, after centuries of prosperity many of the inhabitants ceased to worship the One God, Eru Ilúvatar, and rebelled against the Valar, resulting in the destruction of the island and the death of most of its people. Tolkien was so pleased with her work that he wrote to her expressing the wish that she would illustrate his then incipient Lord of the Rings works. Two decades later, Allen & Unwin commissioned Baynes to paint a map of his Middle-earth. Tolkien supplied her with copies of the charts that he and his son Christopher had made in the course of writing The Lord of the Rings. With the assistance of British Army cartographers, Baynes created the coloured map that Allen & Unwin published as a poster in 1970, embellished with a header and footer showing some of Tolkien's characters, and with vignettes of some of his stories' locations. Tolkien wrote that her conceptions of the Teeth of Mordor, the Argonath, Barad-dûr and, especially, Minas Morgul were very similar to his own, though he was less happy with her images of his heroes and their enemies. According to Baynes, Tolkien's wife Edith remarked on the poster's painting of a spider in a way which gave Baynes the impression that she had not read her husband's work.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-9-000897a_ef5d7a13-ccbb-4a84-9eaf-d72444f61153.jpg?v=1764869793
moscow-metro-underground-kaleidoscope-folding-pocket-network-map-gugk-1980-p-6-109563
Moscow Metro/underground kaleidoscope folding pocket network map. One of 980 sheets issued, this example is numbered 645 and bears Carr’s distinctive sun-face colophon. Carr’s county maps, produced between 1966 and 1982, are whimsical and deliberately non-navigational, conceived as visual anthologies of collective memory that link place with local history, anecdote, folklore, and notable figures rather than practical geography. Densely populated with portraits, buildings, ships, coats of arms, historical scenes, and marginal texts, the map weaves together history, literature, religion, and legend in Carr’s characteristically antiquarian and deeply personal style. Printed and distributed privately, it forms part of the distinctive body of work associated with the Quince Tree Press, now recognised as a singular contribution to post-war British pictorial cartography.

'The County Palatine Lancashire'

The second edition, second impression of J. Contours and spot heights model the mountainous interior, while villages, paths, roads, ferry connections and the intricate shoreline lead the eye from Silver Mine Bay and Mui Wo to Discovery Bay, Penny’s Bay, Peng Chau and Ma Wan. Its date is particularly resonant: Discovery Bay’s first residential phase went on sale in 1980, yet the surrounding transport and resort landscape remained at an early stage. Penny’s Bay retains the coast later remade by reclamation for Hong Kong Disneyland, opened in 2005; the sheet also predates the Tsing Ma and Kap Shui Mun bridges, North Lantau Highway, airport railway and Discovery Bay tunnel. The airport itself now lies west of this sheet. HM20C was the Government’s general-purpose colour series, used by schools, hikers and scouts as well as ordinary map readers. This second-edition Sheet 10 combines immediate local nostalgia with a particularly clear before-and-after record of Lantau’s modern transformation.

11-NE-16A / 11-NE-16C — Series HP1S [To Kwa Wan, Ma Tau Kok and Kowloon Bay]

Two joined 1:1,000 government survey sheets create a continuous, exceptionally detailed plan of To Kwa Wan, Ma Tau Kok and the western shore of Kowloon Bay. Individual buildings, factory and utility compounds, roads, piers and shoreline works reveal how closely housing and industry were interwoven: the gas works, Sung Wong Toi Road, ferry-pier area and Kai Tak Airport’s edge are legible, with the survey continuing south towards Hok Yuen. The joined format allows the waterfront to be read as a whole; contrasting pink and yellow paper tones make their physical union immediately visible. Both were compiled in January 1974, but their different full-revision dates—August 1980 for 11-NE-16A and August 1979 for 11-NE-16C—mean the composite cannot predate August 1980. It preserves an industrial harbour landscape before Kai Tak’s 1998 closure and the area’s subsequent redevelopment, including the later arrival of the Tuen Ma line and Sung Wong Toi station. Finding these two adjacent revisions already joined gives this example particular documentary and display interest. These government survey sheets were intended for practical use and limited circulation. The joined pair is scarce on the market: we could find no dealer or auction record of another pair with these revisions.
