The sheet shows the H. Doulton and Company premises still filling the blocks, although pottery production at Lambeth had ended in 1956. The surviving headquarters of 1878 on Black Prince Road is listed Grade II, and it is now China Works, with offices and studios. Lambeth Walk was the market street immortalised in the song from the 1937 musical Me and My Girl. On this sheet it appears with redevelopment sites and proposed flats and shops among the March 1971 changes, beside Doulton premises that still survived at the time. The sheet also names Lambeth Bridge, the L.C.C. Fire Brigade premises, Whitgift House and the builders Marshall Andrew & Co., and it shows the Old Burial Ground, which had by then become a public garden. Goad's surveyors made these plans to gauge fire risk, and pasted revisions record changes of use, demolition and rebuilding. The printed base heading is dated June 1889, with a 1950 copyright date, and the latest dated correction identified is March 1971, matching the key plan acquired with the group. Other streets on the sheet include Lambeth Road, Lambeth High Street, Old Paradise Street, Newport Street, Black Prince Road, Salamanca Street, Vauxhall Walk, Juxon Street and Randall Row.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-9-001264a_4921f85b-ab76-457a-ac4d-262d7976643c.jpg?v=1792149391
goad-london-280b-se1-se11-lambeth-albert-embankment-doulton-1889-1971-map-p-9-001265
Goad London 280B—SE1/SE11—Lambeth—Albert Embankment—Doulton 1889 (1971) map

Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 280B [Lambeth High Street, Albert Embankment, Black Prince Road and the London Fire Brigade headquarters]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 280B, covers the Lambeth riverside (SE1 and SE11), which was then home to the London Fire Brigade headquarters. The headquarters, which George VI opened in 1937, served the brigade until 2007–08 and still houses Lambeth fire station. Plans approved in October 2026 will bring the headquarters back, with a home for the brigade's historic collection. Southbank House, which the sheet already labels as offices, survives from Doulton's complex, whose pottery closed in 1956, and it is now China Works. The sheet names the Doulton showrooms and Memorial Hall, and it keeps vacancy notes dated May 1968 on earlier Doulton premises. The Metropolitan Police stores and workshops and the Metropolitan Police laboratories are shown under construction in March 1971, beside the G.L.C. Fire Brigade workshops. Lambeth Bridge House, the government offices of 1940, gave way to the Parliament View apartments in the late 1990s. Pasted overlays on these fire-risk plans logged changes of use, demolition and new construction. H. Myer and Company's bedstead and upholstery works combined metalwork, springs and soft furnishings, and the Bennie Lifts workshops, A. Pannell's haulage premises and Melbourne Works stood close by. The street names reach further back. Glasshouse Walk recalls the eighteenth-century Vauxhall glassworks and Tyers Street the family who ran Vauxhall Gardens, while Tinworth Street, together with the Tinworth House shown on the sheet, recalls the Doulton sculptor George Tinworth. The Guinness Trust Buildings of 1893 were demolished in the mid-1970s, and the cleared ground became Spring Gardens, the park that opened in 1976 on the old pleasure-gardens site. Mountain House is named on the sheet as well. Goad issued these plans to underwriters assessing fire risk and revised them with pasted slips recording changes of use, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The printed base heading is dated June 1889, with a 1950 copyright date. Vacancy labels dated March 1971 are the latest correction identified, matching the key plan acquired with the group.
