The sheet names the Sir John Cass Technical Institute, which became Sir John Cass College in 1950 and merged into the City of London Polytechnic in 1970. Its successor, London Metropolitan University, dropped Cass's name from its art school in 2020 over his links to the slave trade. On Jewry Street the sheet shows the Metropolitan Bonded Vaults, with bottling rooms and substantial storage of wines and spirits. These were then working premises for handling goods, the physical trade that lay behind the offices and institutions of this eastern edge of the City. Aldgate Pump and a London Electricity Board distributing station are also named. The plans were made to assess property and fire risk, and they were kept current with pasted slips recording new uses, altered layouts, demolition and rebuilding. The latest dated correction, from August 1969, is an upper-floor vacancy note on Carlisle Avenue. The sheet was reissued in August 1937, with a 1949 copyright date, and the key plans acquired with it carry corrections as late as October 1970 and March 1971. Other streets on the sheet include Fenchurch Street, Aldgate High Street, India Street, Crosswall, Crutched Friars and Rangoon Street.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0923/9583/1643/files/P-9-001123a_f53096e4-aeee-41c4-a3bd-e278145bbd20.jpg?v=1792149035
goad-london-69-ec3-aldgate-leadenhall-st-houndsditch-mitre-sq-1961-1969-map-p-9-001129
Goad London 69—EC3—Aldgate—Leadenhall St—Houndsditch—Mitre Sq 1961 (1969) map

Charles Goad Insurance Plan of London, sheet 69 [Aldgate, Leadenhall Street, Houndsditch and Mitre Square]

Goad's fire insurance plan of London, sheet 69, covers Aldgate and Mitre Square (EC3), the square where Catherine Eddowes was found at 1.44am on 30 September 1888. Hers was the only Jack the Ripper murder inside the City. The sheet names St Katharine Cree, which was consecrated by Laud in 1631 and is now a Guild church. It also names the Sir John Cass Foundation School, which was renamed The Aldgate School in 2020 over Cass's links to the slave trade and now faces Aldgate Square, opened in 2018. The Union Castle Steamship Company offices appear on the sheet as well, and the company's last mail ship from the Cape docked in October 1977. Aldgate Pump still stands at the Leadenhall Street junction, with its lantern recreated in 2019, and GPO offices and stores are also marked. Printers around Mitre Square and Creechurch Lane, together with warehouses and tobacco storage, show how production and the handling of goods persisted among the City offices. The later headquarters development at One Creechurch Place, beside Mitre Square, illustrates the area's further turn towards office employment. The plans were working documents for assessing fire risk, and they were updated with pasted slips recording changes of occupier, altered layouts, demolition and new building. The sheet was resurveyed and reissued in October 1961, with a 1961 copyright date, and its latest dated correction is August 1969. Key plans acquired with the group carry corrections as late as October 1970 and March 1971.
